Prophecy in St. Augustine’s City of God, Book XX

How did one of the Church’s greatest theologians understand the final judgment, the thousand years of Revelation 20, the binding and loosing of Satan, and the conflict involving Gog and Magog?

In Book XX of The City of God, St. Augustine examines some of Scripture’s most important passages concerning the end times. Rather than treating Revelation as a collection of isolated predictions, he interprets it within the broader witness of the Old and New Testaments and the life of Christ’s Church.

This collection brings together selected excerpts from Book XX that are especially relevant to the study of biblical prophecy, including:

  • The Last Judgment and the resurrection of the dead
  • The first and second resurrections
  • The thousand-year reign of Revelation 20
  • The binding and loosing of Satan
  • Gog and Magog
  • The present and future reign of Christ and His saints

This resource allows Luke21 listeners to read St. Augustine’s teaching directly while considering how his interpretation helps illuminate Revelation and the Church’s understanding of the end times.
